Patent Engineering Intern

The Patent Engineering Intern will work in an innovative and collaborative IBM Patent Center focused on a broad range of technologies representing the entire IBM development environment. Under the supervision of a U.S. Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) registered patent attorney or agent, the Patent Engineering Intern will be responsible for learning the basics of patent law and for writing and filing patent applications in the USPTO.
A more inclusive list of responsibilities include: study of relevant patent law, reviewing invention disclosures and patentability search results, interviewing invent! ors, and drafting patent applications for filing in the USPTO.! Qualified candidates will be comfortable with each of the aforementioned responsibilities and with performing these responsibilities in a collaborative environment. Although knowledge of the patent procurement process is preferred, on the job training will be provided in an interactive and collaborative format modeled to the highly motivated individual.
Candidates will exhibit high-level writing and communication skills and will have a desire to learn. They will work with team members, inventors and other intellectual property professionals throughout IBM.
Internships will begin at the start of summer. Candidates will preferably be a rising senior enrolled full-time for the upcoming semester in a college or university or a rising 2nd year or 3rd year enrolled for the upcoming semester in a law school. Candidates should preferably be enrolled in one or more of the following:
Computer Science
Computer Systems Engineering
Electrica! l Engineering
Chemistry or Chemical Engineering
Materials Engineering
Mechanical Engineering
Physics
Another science or engineering major with significant course work in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Chemistry or Physics.
Required
High School Diploma/GED
Basic knowledge in Patent procurement or a willingness to learn how to write and file U.S. patent applications
English: Fluent
Preferred
At least 3 years experience in an Engineering or Science degree
At least 2 years experience in a Law degree and qualified to sit for the Patent Bar
Licensed in USPTO
