This position is located in the French Translation Service, Documentation Division, Department for General Assembly and Conference Management (DGACM) at Headquarters. The incumbent is und! er the general supervision of the Chief of the French Translation Service.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Senior Reviser will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Revises translations and original summary records dealing with subjects of an exceptionally sensitive, complex or technical nature.
  • Translates texts of an exceptionally sensitive, complex or technical nature.
  • Directs the conduct of terminological research within the translation unit concerned.
  • Counsels and assists revisers and translators/précis-writers, as required, at and away from Headquarters in addition to performing all or some of their functions.
  • Assists the Chief of Service in the preparation of terminology materials to meet the needs of the Service concerned.
  • Assists the Chief of Service in the preparation of instructions.
  • Assists the Chief of Service in monitoring the quality of in-house and c! ontractual translations.
  • Trains junior language staff! .
  • Programmes daily and long-term work of the Service.
  • Assists the Chief of Service in selecting texts for United Nations competitive examinations, in marking candidates’ scripts and in evaluating results.
  • Serves as officer-in-charge in the absence of the Chief of Service.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Competencies

Professionalism:
Excellent writing and analytical skills. Highest standards of accuracy, consistency and faithfulness to the spirit, style and nuances of the original text. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written. Knowledge of terminological and reference research techniques with ability to use all sources of reference and information and to do research. Knowledge of a broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations, i.e. political, social, legal, economic, financial, administrative, scientific and technical. Highest level of initiative, politica! l sensitivity, versatility, judgement and discretion, tact and negotiating skills. Familiarity with the range of issues relating to management of the Translation Services.

Teamwork:
Ability to gain the support and cooperation of others in a team endeavour by demonstrating recognized technical competence and leadership skills, sensitivity and respect for diversity.

Technological awareness:
Commitment to actively follow developments in technology with potential applications for translation and willingness to learn to use appropriate new technologies; familiarity with relevant technological developments and computer tools.

Ability to lead group efforts in larger and more difficult translation projects; tact and negotiating skills; good judgement and decision-making skills; provides leadership in, and takes responsibility for, incorporating gender perspectives and ensuring the equal participation of women a! nd men in all areas of work.

Managing Performance:
! Ability to accurately judge the amount of time and resources needed to accomplish a task and to match task to skills.

Education

A first-level university degree from a university or from an institution of equivalent status. Must have passed the United Nations Competitive Examination for French-language translators/precis-writers.

Work Experience

A minimum of ten years of experience in translation and revision(at least four of which should have been revision experience), of which eight should have been within the United Nations. Knowledge of a broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations (political, social, legal, economic, financial, administrative, scientific and technical) with a recognized specialization in a particular substantive, technical or adminsitrative area is required. Facility in using the United Nations terminology databases and knowledge of software used in the United Nations is required.

Languages
A perfect command of French, which must be the incumbent’s main language and an excellent knowledge of English and of another UN official language, as tested by the United Nations Competitive Examination for French-language translators/precis-writers.

The requirement of a third language may be waived in the case of candidates who possess a degree in law.

Assessment Method

Applicants will be assessed by a competency-based interview process.

Special Notice
