Staff Attorney for the Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York in Saratoga, New York, serving Saratoga, Washington and Warren Counties.
Responsibilities : The Attorney will be responsible for providing! legal assistance to clients in matters involving the essentials of life: housing, (evictions, foreclosures, utility shut offs, preventing homelessness, and shelter related public assistance), access to health care and education, subsistence income (wages, SSI/SSD, disability and unemployment insurance benefits and other public assistance benefits), consumer debt (wage garnishment, frozen assets, debt management) and child support. The attorney will be expected to provide a full range of legal services, including counsel and advice, administrative hearings, litigation, community legal education and systemic advocacy.
Qualifications : 2-6 years’ prior legal experience or equivalent. Admitted to New York State Bar. Demonstrated commitment to providing high quality legal services to clients in a variety of civil matters. Must be willing to make a two year commitment to the Legal Aid Society. Must be able to communicate effectively with clients and staff, and ! work independently and efficiently. Must be able to provide le! gal services and become expert in a broad range of substantive areas of law, and practice expertly in many forums in three counties. Must be able to identify and address systemic legal problems, and work with other staff to ensure delivery of a full range of legal services to clients served by the Amsterdam office. Good computer skills. Must have a car and a clean, valid driver’s license. Ability to speak Spanish and prior relevant legal experience strongly preferred.
Program Profile : The Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York is a publicly funded law firm with five offices providing free civil legal services to low-income individuals living in 16 counties in northeastern New York. Our current priorities are: Support for Families; Preserving the Home; Maintaining Economic Stability; Maintaining Safety, Stability and Health; and Serving Populations with Special Vulnerabilities
Salary : $43,072 to $51,087 DOE; excellent benefits includin! g limited loan repayment assistance for eligible applicants.
