The Bronx Defenders seeks an energetic and visionary Managing Attorney with proven experience and a commitment to social justice to lead its Civil Ac! tion Practice (CAP). At Bronx Defenders, the Civil Action Practice provides comprehensive legal services to clients and their families by fully integrating civil representation within the criminal and family defense practices. This holistic approach minimizes the severe and often unforeseen fallout from criminal and family proceedings and facilitates the successful reentry of our clients into the community.

The Managing Attorney will oversee a staff of sixteen CAP attorneys and six paralegals, all of whom advocate for clients in every venue in New York City â€" administrative, state, and federal. The CAP’s generalist civil attorneys work closely with clients and other attorneys during the criminal and family court process, providing comprehensive representation to address the devastating consequences of those experiences including eviction, loss of employment, denial of public and disability benefits, forfeiture of property, and police misconduct. The CAP’s imm! igration attorneys provide a full range of representation from! the moment of arrest, consulting with clients and attorneys during the criminal process, submitting affirmative benefits applications, and representing clients in deportation proceedings after the criminal process. The Managing Attorney will also lead community-based systemic reform litigation and creative policy advocacy to meet goals and priorities identified by clients. S/he will be the primary spokesperson for CAP both internally and externally, and will develop and maintain funding sources of approximately $2 million a year.

Responsibilities:
The Managing Attorney will lead and inspire a staff of more than 20 advocates and has primary management responsibility for program innovation, staff development, network building, and fundraising for the Civil Action Practice (CAP). Key responsibilities include:

Lead The Bronx Defenders’ innovative approach to holistic civil practice, including:
Supervising a CAP leadership team of three Practi! ce Supervisors
Developing and leading new initiatives to improve integrated criminal, civil and family court practice and delivery of reentry legal services in collaboration with the Executive Management Team and outside partners
Developing and implementing new ways of evaluating the effectiveness of the CAP practice
Collaborating with Executive Management Team to develop and implement best practices for the integrated teams of advocates
Identifying trends, systemic issues and policies that affect clients and the practice area and proactively finding innovative solutions
Directing and managing affirmative litigation arising from the integrated practice, in consultation with the other Managing Attorneys
Developing and implementing statewide technical assistance, training, support, and policy initiatives related to integrated practice, reentry, and the consequences of criminal and family proceedings
Participate actively and positively in The Bronx ! Defenders’ Executive Management Team,
reporting directly to the E! xecutive Director
Manage, oversee, and be a resource for the work of attorneys and other staff in the Civil
Action Practice
In partnership with the Executive Director, develop and maintain funding sources for the
Civil Action Practice, which currently has an operating budget of over $2 million
Monitor The Bronx Defenders’ grant agreements and contracts for CAP and measure
compliance
Establish and maintain effective communication and relations with the client community,
the private bar, the courts, funding sources, governmental and community organizations, elected and other public officials, the media, and the public defender and legal services community

Requirements for the position include:
Experience:
A minimum of five years of experience in providing a range of civil legal services or civil
rights advocacy to low-income individuals and families
A minimum of three years of senior-lev! el experience in management, administrative and/or leadership positions! in a nonprofit legal services program, or equivalent experience demonstrating outstanding skills in those areas
Must be an attorney in good standing, continuously licensed to practice law for at least the past five years
Litigation experience, particularly exposure to federal litigation is preferred Credentials:

Licensed to practice law in the State of New York or eligible for admission
to the New York bar at the time of hiring (must be admitted within one year of hire) Skills:

Extensive knowledge and understanding of the legal problems of CAP’s client population and the provision of client-centered legal services to low-income populations; substantive experience in housing, immigration, public benefits, employment, and civil rights law a plus
Strong legal, leadership, management, fundraising, and communication skills, with the ability to relate effectively to a diverse group of clients and staff
Knowledge of and a commitment to clie! nt-centered services
Meaningful experience in human resource management, and in organizational and
financial planning
Demonstrable ability to relate to and communicate with people in CAP’s client community, as well as with those in social service, government, judicial, and business communities
Experience with cultivation and solicitation of individual or institutional donors
Proficiency in Spanish desirable
Experience providing inter-disciplinary services a plus Personal Attributes:
