The Legal Aid Society is an experienced and talented lawyer with a deep commitment to public interest practice and policy to join a dedicated team of managers and staff of attorneys, social workers, supervisors, and support personnel as the Attorney-in-Charge of the Civil Practice’s Queens Neighborhood Office. Applicants should have a demonstrated commitment to addressing fundamental issues of poverty and justice within a comprehensive civil legal services model of representation and an interest in creative approaches to management and staff development.
The Attorney-in-Charge (AIC) is responsible for the overall administration and oversight of the office with a current staff of 1 supervising attorney, 14 staff attorneys, 4 paralegal casehandlers, 1 office manager and 4 support personnel. In this position, you will: provide legal and managerial leadership for the Civil Practice in Queens ogether with the Civil Practice AIC; supervise staff attorneys and paralegals; monitor and maintain a high standard of representation and client service; maintain reasonable individual caseload; develop impact and/or affirmative litigation; assist with the development, funding, implementation and reporting of programs; coordinate intake; provide oversight of pro bono initiatives within the office; respond to client, community and staff concerns; evaluate office needs and identify necessary resources to address the needs; analyze legal issues, develop legal strategy and supervise the implementation of legal strategies; foster and encourage teamwork and communication; reinforce and maintain staff accountability; mentor staff; develop skills and knowledge of staff members; evaluate conflicting demands and prioritize workload; develop and maintain community support and relationships with community-based organizations, advocates, government agencies, elected officials and the courts; represent the Civil Practice and Legal Aid in the community; conduct community education, training and outreach and promote the work of the office and the Civil Practice.
The ideal candidate must have: minimum of six years legal practice preferred; experience litigating in various legal forums, including state and federal courts; capable of working in many different forums; excellent oral and written advocacy skills, litigation skills and experience litigating individual and group cases; demonstrated commitment and experience in public interest law; experience supervising and mentoring others; admission to NYS Bar; supervisory and management experience preferred; demonstrated leadership ability; demonstrated commitment and experience in public interest law; grant-writing and fundraising experience; excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills; commitment to exploring alternative approaches for legal practice; ability to work in and value a collaborative team model; p ro bono , government, public service and academic experience is desirable, but not required; and proficiency in languages other than English is desirable, but not required.
