Job Summary: The staff attorney works as part of a team with the CGP staff to provide comprehensive legal and advocacy services to guardianship clients. Job Responsibilities 1. Handle individual caseload in Article 81 guardianship law including handling gua rdianship discharges, including seeking permanent placement of a client; seeking expansion or contraction of powers; may include some Civil Court (Housing) appearances with staff and/or clients. 2. Works with and shares responsibility of supervising Program Specialists and volunteer attorneys. 3. Works with senior management and staff to develop case plans with respect to legal issues. 4. Able to competently and timely provide a full range of legal service. These services include: a) Administrative advocacy and representation at hearings before public and private agencies and authorities b) Litigations in state courts c) Drafting pleadings and other legal documents d) Obtaining and reviewing documents and records e) Legal research and writing f) Negotiating and settling matters g) Interviewing clients and providing appropriate advice h) Referral to other sources of legal assistance 5. Participate in staff meetings, training seminars and community activities as appropriate. 6 . Maintains required case records, reports and statistics in a timely and complete manner. 7. Handles special assignments and duties as assigned.

Demonstrates cooperation and collaborative work efforts. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: J.D. is required. At least two years experience in elder or administrative law, is desirable, with experience in client representation, advocacy, training, and community education regarding Medicaid and other government entitlement programs. Experience and/or demonstrated commitment in community service, government benefits, and social justice issues are desirable. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS Must be admitted to practice law in the State of New York and maintain active license LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style presentations on controversial or compl ex topics to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors. Ability to draft legal documents, briefs, using correct citation form and organization. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee must frequently stand, walk, sit, and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, stoop, lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. The employee is regularly required to talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision. OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Must be skilled in use of MS WORD, Excel, Outlook or similar programs, LEXIS, and internet search tools.
