The Legal Aid Society's Criminal Practice has an opening for a fully felony certified staff attorney position to provide client services in the Brooklyn office. Criminal Defense staf! f attorneys handle all aspects of criminal defense from arraignment through trial. Attorneys are responsible for client counseling, preparing motions, plea negotiations, directing investigations, interviewing witnesses, referring cases for social work intervention, preparing for and conducting hearings and trials, and handling proceedings in Criminal Court and Supreme Court related to their clients' criminal cases.
In this position, you will: represent clients charged with offenses in Criminal Court and Supreme Court; handle ancillary proceedings related to the criminal cases; and perform other duties as assigned.
The ideal candidate must possess: 3 or more years of criminal defense practice experience that includes significant felony jury trial experience as lead counsel; excellent writing and verbal communication skills; knowledge of the law of evidence, criminal and constitutional law, statutory interpretation, and ethical principles conta! ined in the Rules of Professional Conduct; demonstrated intere! st in serving low-income communities; ability to work collegially with all segments of staff; and a commitment to indigent defense and client-centered representation.
