This is a unique and exciting opportunity for a highly qualified lawyer.

This position presents opportunities to address and litigate emerging! issues in the areas of health care, doctors and labor law.
You will be responsible for providing legal counsel and assistance to our staff and members. This can include bargaining, grievances and arbitrations, and matters pertaining to administrative and regulatory agencies.

We are looking for innovative lawyering in pursuit of representing our members, improving working and patient care delivery standards, organizing doctors and engaging in political action.

You will be responsible for assisting in all aspects of our union, including an organizing program to educate, empower and enable doctors to join Doctors Council. This can include organizing through a first contract as well as membership that is not dependent on collective bargaining.

Responsibilities:
The qualified individual will be responsible for proving legal counsel, assistance and advocacy work in all aspects of our union helping us build power and membership. Duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Provi! ding legal advice to union leadership, staff and members.
  • Collective bargaining.
  • Grievances and arbitrations, contract enforcement.
  • Legal assistance and strategy in organizing.
  • Representing us before the NLRB, state labor boards and other administrative proceedings.
  • Analyzing and working with existing legal structures governing organizing doctors in different states nationally.
  • Developing and pursuing defensive and proactive litigation strategies.
  • Regulatory, statutory and legislative issues.
  • Drafting proposed legislation, regulations and other policy initiatives.
  • Be aware of, monitor and evaluate proposed bills and legislative proposals on a national, state and local level.
  • Legal assistance and strategy in advancing our political program.
  • Review and assist in leases, vendor contracts and other commercial agreements.
  • Review and give input into legally sensitive commun! ications.
  • Working with laws and regulations governing doctors,! the medical profession, and hospitals and health systems.
  • Interacting with members and participating in meetings and trainings.
  • Work with SEIU and other unions, as well as community, medical and political allies.
Qualifications:
Applicants for this position must have a Juris Doctorate Degree from an accredited law school, be an attorney admitted in New York State and have at least ten (10) years of experience in labor law and practice, including preparation and trial of arbitrations and other evidentiary proceedings. Being admitted in Illinois, New Jersey and/or Pennsylvania a plus. You must also have:

  • Excellent legal analytic, research and writing skills, along with strong communication skills, both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of laws and regulations governing doctors, patients, the medical profession, and hospitals and health systems, and health care reform and changes.
  • Experience in physici! an licensing matters, credentialing and medical board proceedings.
  • Ability to speak persuasively; oral advocacy.
  • Strong academic record and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to analyze complex legal issues thoroughly and comprehensively and to convey the results of your analysis with precision both in writing and orally.
  • Demonstrated commitment to employees' rights.
  • Experience in advocating for employees, such as on wage and hour issues.
  • Extremely well organized.
  • Capable of handling multiple, complex assignments; managing a substantial and varied caseload, with multiple priorities.
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines.
  • Superb "people" skills.
  • Ability to relate, establish and cultivate meaningful relationships with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • A knowledge of union organizing practices and principles and thorough knowledge of labor laws, in both private and public sectors.
  • S! ensitivity to political nuances within a labor organization.
  • E! xperience working with coalitions.
  • Advanced knowledge of and ability to use technology as a tool to advance goals.
  • Must be able to drive and maintain a valid driver's license, auto insurance and reliable car, as well as possess personal credit cards. Be able to drive distances, and travel throughout the country to different states and cities. Travel and work away from home.

You must be a self-starter with the ability to work with supervision. This position requires long! and varied hours, including nights and weekends, with travel. Travel will be required, especially to where we represent doctors and to areas where we may be looking to organize doctors. This position is based out of our national office in New York and reports to the Chief of
Staff.

Salary and benefits: Salary depends on experience. Excellent full benefit package includes 100% employer paid self and dependent medical and dental, as well as 100% employer paid defined benefit pension plan.
