The Program seeks to bring the ideal of representative self-government closer to reality, by eliminating barriers to full and equal political participation and by striving to ensure that public policy and institutions represent and reflect the diverse voices and interests that make for a rich and energetic democracy. Position: The Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law is seeking an experienced attorney to work in the Brennan Centerâs Democracy Program. The Counsel will be assigned primarily to our Voting Rights and Elections team, which works to ensure that voting is free, fair, and accessible for all Americans. Our current signature proposal is to modernize the voter registration system which would save money, increase accuracy and participation, and add an additional 50 million voters to the rolls permanently. At the same time, we actively defend against to restrict the vote by spearheading strategic impact litigation, groundbreaking studies, and national public education campaigns. The Counsel may also be assigned to another team as well.
Responsibilities include:
- Conducting legal and academic research and authoring reports that shed l! ight on problems in our systems of democracy and propose concrete policy solutions.
- Leading appellate and trial court litigation or amicus practice to protect and expand voting rights, including work on case development, discovery, motions, and briefs.
- Advancing Brennan Center goals through media and communications work, including public speaking engagements, media appearances, blog posts, op-eds and conferences.
- Coordinating legislative and policy advocacy at the state and federal level.
- Counseling federal and state policy makers and advocates, and drafting and reviewing legislation.
- Working closely with and supervising teams of attorneys, researchers, fellows, and communications professionals.
- Assisting with management of a dynamic and wide-ranging program, including spearheading recruitment and hiring processes for new positions.
