The New York City Family Justice Centers provide centralized services for victims of domestic violence an! d their children. Those seeking assistance are able to consult with a prosecutor, receive counseling or civil legal services, and apply for housing and financial aid all under one roof, while their children play safely nearby. Twenty-seven nonprofit organizations and seven government agencies provide these services onsite. Private/public partnerships are critical to provide essential programs to victims and their children. Onsite partner staff have close daily interaction with Mayor's Office staff and with representatives of other City and nongovernmental organizations, enabling immediate onsite referrals and consultations.

Position Overview : The Children's Activity Leader provides educational, recreational and social activities for children and families who have experienced domestic violence through Sanctuary for Families Children and Youth Services Program at the New York City Family Justice Center in Manhattan ("MFJC"). Assists with conducting community ! education and outreach events. Provides back-up assistance to ! the intake specialists or other MFJC staff as needed.

Responsibilities:
Primary responsibility is to provide childcare to children whose caregivers visit the MFJC

Facilitates therapeutic activity groups for children

Assists Children's Activity Coordinator with developing and compiling curriculum for children's groups and activities

Conducts community education and outreach events as assigned

Helps to connect children and their caregivers with children's resources in their communities

Assists with maintaining inventory in the Children's Room and ordering supplies

Accompanies clients on special events and recreational activities outside of the office when requested

Participates in weekly supervision and other meetings as necessary

Compiles and enters statistics and assists with record keeping

Provides back-up assistance to the intake specialists or other MFJC staff (for exampl! e: checking identifications, contacting partner staff concerning appointments, assisting clients in obtaining orders of protection, and other duties as assigned)

Performs any other department or agency-related duties or special projects as needed and as assigned

Organizational Relationships:
Reports to the Children's Activity Coordinator at the MFJC

Works collaboratively with staff at Sanctuary for Families and partner agencies at the MFJC

Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree, preferably in social service-related discipline

Minimum one year in similar position including leading children's groups

Demonstrated ability to work with children and families

Understanding of and dedication to eliminating domestic violence

Knowledge of child development

Experience collaborating with professionals from various disciplines including social workers, case workers, administrative professio! nals, police officers, lawyers and volunteers

Good oral and wr! itten communication skills as well as computer literacy

Spanish language proficiency required

Experience in working with immigrant families

Ability to work some evenings during the week, according to program schedule and needs
