This means we kayak among icebergs, travel to hidden waterfalls, snorkel with sea lions, dive with manta rays and share air with whales. Our destinations include Alaska, Columbia & Snake Rivers, Costa Rica & Panama, Belize, Galapagos, Hawaiian Islands, Mexico’s Sea of Cortes, and Pacific Northwest.

Job Summary

The Sommelier is an expert in wine, terroir, history, and service with a deep understanding of the regions in and around the Columbia and Snake Rivers. They are an integral member of the hotel department, adding not only to the guest experience, but also to the knowledge base of the hotel and galley crew. This position is heavily guest facing and requires presentations throughout the week, multiple daily pairings, and participation in guest activities. The Sommelier will also work closely with the Hotel Manager to ensure proper inventory control and ordering. The Sommelier falls under the umbrella of the hotel department, and reports to the Hotel Manager.

The first rotation is September 2nd - September 23rd, second rotation is September 30th - October 7th.

Essential Duties

  • Present, pour and serve daily wine parings with lunch, dinner, and dessert complementing menu items and itinerary.
  • Present in the dining room and participating in service during all meals, as well as throughout the day at cocktail hours, making rounds throughout the vessel during sailing times, etc.
  • Accompany guests off vessel for excursions, tastings, and town time- answer guest questions and work with the winery staff to ensure a smooth, knowledgeable, and pleasant experience for the guests.
  • Daily training with front and back of house teams. This position requires constant communication with the Head Chef and should add substantial wine knowledge to the hotel and galley crew.
  • Assisting in all crew activities as directed by the Hotel Manager in tasks that may not be directly related wine including public space cleanliness, polishing silver and glassware, running food and bussing tables, and loading stores.
  • Administrative responsibilities:
    • Provide a short biography and professional photo to the marketing team
    • Track inventory weekly and place orders with vendors as needed
    • Record pairings through the week to provide guests with a printed summary at the end of the cruise
  • Required Presentations- (5 per cruise):
  • Introduction
  • History/ Geography focus ex. “Best of Hood River Valley”
  • 2 Presentations of choice
  • Farewell recap

Onboard Sommeliers are permitted to taste wine offerings as needed and enjoy up to 2 glasses of wine per day. This should only be during cocktail hour, while dining with guests, or in the lounge while socializing with guests. Beer, spirits and imbibing during town time or off time are not permitted.

Qualifications

  • Master Court of Sommelier- Level 1 Certification or Wine & Spirit Education Trust- Level 2 Certification
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in high volume wine restaurant or winery
  • Extremely comfortable with public speaking
  • Familiarity with an onboard, sailing position- preferred

Work Schedule

This is an onboard sailing position.

Onboard Environment / Physical Demands

  • Living Conditions- Crew live in close quarters with 4 to 8 crew per room depending on the vessel. Having your own room is not an option due to limited berthing.
  • Length of Work Shift- Physically able to work 12 hours per day, 7 days a week for 6 to 8 weeks at a time. Rotations off the vessel are usually 2 to 3 weeks.
  • Mobility- Frequent bending, reaching, twisting, kneeling, crawling, and pushing/pulling. Must ascend and descend stairs and ladders, sometimes while carrying tools or objects. Able to stand or sit for long periods of time.
  • Handling/Strength- Able to handle, lift, and lower objects totaling 50 pounds between the ground/deck level to a height of about 4 to 6 feet, and able to repeat these movements. Able to carry these objects up to 100 feet continuously for 20 minutes.
  • Environmental Conditions- Able to work in all weather conditions, around loud noise, in small spaces, and fit through a 28-inch wide hatch.

Base Pay: $310 / day
