LDF seeks an experienced! , creative, and highly motivated attorney for the position of ! Senior Education Counsel in the New York office. LDF is committed to the vigorous pursuit of educational equity and has an extensive history of promoting the educational well-being of students of color. LDF seeks to address the structural obstacles and policies that underlie continuing racial disparities. LDF pursues this work through litigation, policy advocacy, strategic communications, and public education.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Senior Education Counsel will:
Develop, lead, supervise, consult and advise on litigation that advances education-related civil rights in federal and state court and before administrative bodies;
Serve as lead counsel in the litigation of complex, education-related civil rights impact cases, including the investigation of potential claims, preparation of complaints, motion practice, discovery, hearings and oral arguments, trials and appeals;
Supervise and manage litigation teams comprise! d of individuals from within and outside of LDF;
Serve as a public thought leader on education issues confronting minority and low-income students
Represent LDF in the media, at conferences and in other venues
Prepare amicus briefs;
Analyze current opportunities and challenges in education law;
Cultivate awareness of the difficulties faced by African Americans and other communities of color in the field of education;
Develop and maintain relationships with community partners, coalition members, and legal allies;
Assist in creating and implementing multi-pronged education strategic plans using litigation, organizing, public education, legislation and policy advocacy;
Prepare policy reports, memoranda, briefing papers and talking points for internal and external use on education issues;
Assist LDF colleagues in developing their skills in impact litigation and other interdisciplinary advocacy stra! tegies to effect change;
Foster relationships with other advoc! ates, lawyers and civil rights organizations; and
Travel extensively as necessary.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have:
A J.D. degree and admission to the New York or District of Columbia Bar (eligibility to waive in);
Substantial litigation and policy experience in the education field;
A demonstrated commitment to racial justice, educational reform and civil rights;
Outstanding legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills; Broad, relevant litigation experience at the trial and appellate level, including exposure to class action cases;
Federal and/or state advocacy experience related to education reform for communities of color;
Effective public speaking experience;
The ability to work both collaboratively and independently;
Supervisory and case management experience with an interest in and commitment to the professional development, training and support of ! attorneys, legal interns and administrative staff;
Capacity to analyze and articulate legal concepts and other complex issues to a variety of audiences; and
A vision for attacking persistent barriers to full educational access and equality for African Americans.
