The Center for Court Innovation, a project of the Fund for the City of New York, is a unique public-private partnership that promotes new thinking about how courts and criminal justice agencies can aid victims, change the behavior of offenders, and strengthen communities. The Center creates demonstration projects that test new approaches to problems that have resisted conventional solutions.
The Centerâs problem-solving courts include the nationâs first community court (Midtown Community Court), as well as drug courts, domestic violence courts, youth courts, mental health courts, and others. Nationally and internationally, the Center performs original research on topics of justice reform and provides consulting services to criminal justice innovators. The Harlem Community Justice Center (âJustice Centerâ) is a project of the Center for Court Innovation. Located in an old magistrateâs courthouse in the heart of East Harlem, the Harlem Community Justice Center is a community-based court and resource center that works to solve neighborhood problems in East and Central Harlem, including juvenile delinquency, deteriorating housing, substance abuse, and the challenges presented by ex-offenders returning from incarceration.
The Justice Center is seeking a dynamic and experienced professional with knowledge of Housing Court to coordinate its on-site Help Center. The Help Center is a one-stop center for litigants and community members to access services in the Justice Center and through an extensive network of partners. The goal of the Help Center is to ensure access to justice for all litigants in Housing and Family Court regardless of their background, ability to pay, or special needs. Working in a collaborative manner, the Help Center Coordinator is responsible for: coordinating intakes and linkages to services, managing on-site and community partnerships, working with the Judge and Court staff to aid pro-se litigants, and conducting community education events. This role requires a highly motivated and organized professional who works well with others and has a passion for public service. The Help Center Coordinator reports to the Deputy Project Director for Clinical & Court Services.
Duties
Oversee day-to-day Help Center operations;
Supervise Help Center Associate, interns and volunteers;
Work closely with on-site Pro Se Attorney and Human Resources Administration (HRA) Staff;
Manage the on-site mediation program in partnership with the New York Peace Institute;
Collaborate with the on-site clinical unit to connect litigants and community members to case management services;
Ensure that Help Center clients are screened and assessed and intake forms are accurately recorded in the Justice Center database in a timely manner;
Prioritize persons with a current case in Housing or Family Court and vulnerable persons facing eviction, domestic abuse, or are otherwise in a crisis situation that requires immediate attention;
Provide excellent client service and ensure that the Help Center waiting area and office are friendly and responsive to client needs at all times.
Provide access to Housing and Family Court information for self-represented litigants through referrals to the Pro Se Attorney, use of online tools, and the provision of informational materials;
Promote use of the Access to Justice âDo It Yourselfâ programs for pro se litigants;
Organize workshops for litigants and the broader community that facilitate access to justice through the Courts and related agencies;
Serve as a liaison between the Justice Center and Civil Court staffs on matters related to the Help Centerâs work;
Conduct community outreach for Housing Court seminars;
Coordinate referrals for litigants to in-house and community-based services;
Work with the Deputy Project Director and Project Director to complete grant applications and manage funder relationships;
Maintain daily sign-in sheets;
Complete timely and accurate reports.
Requirements :
Bachelorâs degree required ;
Law Degree or Masters of Social Work Degree preferred;
Knowledge of basic NYS housing law and the Housing Court process required ;
Mediation/Alternative Dispute Resolution experience required;
Excellent client engagement skills required ;
Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) highly desired;
Knowledge of family law and the Family Court processes desired;
Sound analytical and writing skills;
Excellent presentation skills;
Experience with Microsoft Office and database programs (Access/Filemaker);
