Location: New York, New York

Description: Urban Justice Center - Veteran Advocacy Project is at present looking to employ Staff Attorney - Housing right now, this vacancy will be placed in New York. Further informations about this vacancy opportunity please read the description below. The Veteran Advocacy Project (VAP) at the Urban Justice Center seeks applicants for a staff attorney. The position will focus on litigation and advocac! y on behalf of low-income veterans in housing matters.

The attorney will be responsible for providing direct legal assistance to veterans in the Supportive Services for Veterans Families program, including representation in Housing Court, at NYCHA hearings, and in advocacy involving HUD-VASH vouchers. In addition, the position will involve work with veterans on minor matters concerning consumer finance, child support, and government benefits.

Military experience or prior work with veterans is a plus.

Responsibilities:
Represent clients in housing court and administrative hearings;

Conduct intake at partner organizations' intake sites;

Provide telephone and/or written advice to clients;

Research legal issues, with a focus on housing law, public benefits, and VA benefits;

Provide thorough referrals to connect clients with other services;

Work with other staff on case strategies and integration ! of services to meet clients' needs;

Track client info! rmation in our database, prepare reports for grants/funding sources, attend meetings, perform administrative tasks related to the work.

Qualifications

JD and current membership in good standing of the New York State Bar;

Minimum 2 years of experience litigating in Housing Court;

Demonstrated proficiency in legal research;

Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills;

Efficient and meticulous attention to detail;

Effective communication skills, including the ability to work with people living with mental illness, substance abuse problems, and traumatic brain injury;

Ability to work independently with strong motivation, to manage a high client load, to meet deadlines, and to be flexible.

This is a bargaining unit position represented for collective bargaining purposes by the National Organization of Legal Services Workers, UAW, Local 2230.
